Social media has gone wild today with coverage from the 74th Golden Globe Awards; political speeches, glamorous after parties, and the fashion magazine’s best-dressed lists. Scrolling through the red carpet looks this morning, it became very apparent that the stars have eschewed colour this year for statement black and white. Be it Nicole Kidman and Michelle Williams in full length ethereal white gowns, or Kristin Bell and Blake Lively in sultry black, the monochrome look is very striking.
Other stars opted to combine the two for bold contrasts. Evan Rachel Wood ditched the dress for a chic custom Altuzarra black and white tuxedo, while Sophie Turner combined sheer black and white paneling in her modern Louis Vuitton look. Celeb couples and co-stars choose to mirror each other with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell in coordinating black, and La La Land winners Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in light shades.
For 2017’s brides there is tons of wedding fashion inspiration from floor length white lace, to silver applique on white tulle, statement metallic accessories and cut out or off the shoulder styles. For wedding designers and planners these trends could translate beautifully for your client’s palette and décor. I’m seeing a statement all white wedding with ethereal floaty fabrics and grey and silver touches. Alternatively, it could inspire an elegant all black evening event with black sequins or velvet, and striking gold accents. At the Academy we encourage our students to take inspiration from popular culture and the wider world of design through our two design led courses, the Certificate in Event Design and the Diploma in Wedding Planning, Styling & Design. How does 2017’s first red carpet fashion moment inspire you?
