How do you run a successful wedding business? If only I had a dollar for every time I have been asked that question. I know I have said it before in other posts but running a business and being a wedding planner do not go hand in hand. Unfortunately, just because you are a great wedding planner, designer or stylist doesn’t mean that you will automatically be a good business person. The business of weddings takes different skills to the planning of weddings.
There is something that I lovingly refer to as ‘The 6 P’s of Launching a successful Wedding Business. They cover the basics you need to know when taking those first faltering steps:
Preparation – without good preparation even the best business ideas will fail
Purpose – if you don’t know what the purpose of your business is – how will anyone else
Promotion – although word of mouth is by far the best marketing tool, you need to create the buzz to get the word of mouth happening
Performance – without a good consultation technique you’ll never get the chance to show off your planning skills
Proposal – this is the deal breaker. A good proposal will win or loose you your client
Now if you notice, no where in there is anything about etiquette, flowers, cakes, sourcing a venue, tool kits or anything else to do with planning a wedding. Why? Because we are assuming you already know how to plan a wedding or why else would you be launching a wedding business? It is essential that you embrace all aspects of running a wedding business in order to truly make it a success! As well as the business units in our course material we are also the publishers of The Wedding Business Magazine, a great free resource packed full of industry news, business advice and pro tips. Our July issue will be released at the end of this month, get it direct to your inbox by subscribing today.
