Today is the day! It’s time to announce the finalists of the #WedAcademyChallenge and reveal the finalist’s design boards.
We recently set you, our Academy community, the challenge of designing a wedding inspiration board inspired by the Spring 2019 colours featured in the Fashion Colour Trend Report published by Pantone, the international authority on colour.
We’ve seen a record-breaking number of entries this year, with some of you doing a board for each of the 12 colours! We host challenges like this to encourage you to put your design skills to work, practice working to a brief and build confidence in promoting your own work via social media. So congratulations to each and every one of you for taking on the challenge and putting yourself out there.
The difficult task of selecting 3 finalists for each Pantone colour theme fell to our CEO and international Wedding & Event expert, Kylie Carlson. To say it was a tough decision is an understatement!
“The Pantone competition is held yearly and it is highly anticipated by both the team here at Academy HQ and our students and followers on social media. Creating design boards based on a particular colour scheme is such a great way to practice your skills and to make you work with a colour that might not necessarily be one you would normally choose to use within a design. These types of challenges really help you to grow as a stylist and designer by expanding your skill set. This year was a record year for us with over 300 entries and all of such a high standard.
For me, when choosing the boards to put through as finalists I was looking for a cohesive design that really told a story. One that leapt off the page at me and made me stop and look. The composition of the board, the use of a variety of images and playing around with styles was important too. A top tip when I’m designing a board like this is to try not to repeat elements. If you’ve already showcased a bouquet then try not to repeat flowers within the design. Always look outside of weddings because what you’re trying to achieve with a design board is a feeling for the overall style of the event and that doesn’t always have to be done with wedding or event elements. You’re wanting to appeal to all five senses and sometimes a picture of the ocean might do that much better than a picture of some cocktails, for example.” – Kylie Carlson
So I bet you are dying to know who our finalists are, so I won’t keep you in suspense any longer…
Below are the names of our finalists and their beautiful wedding design boards inspired by their Pantone colour of choice. The difficult task of picking the winning boards will now fall to our guest judge Zainab Alsalih, Founder and Creative Director of Carousel, an industry renowned wedding planning and design agency based in Dubai.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get feedback from one of the industries most talented wedding designers. Zainab will select her favourite board for each colour category and provide feedback on her selections, as well as picking an overall winner of the competition. The winning boards will be featured here on the Academy Live blog and be part of a special article in the upcoming October issue of The Wedding Business Magazine which goes out to almost 20,000 subscribers!
